camping

OK so you might have picked up by now on the fact that we have purchased a new tent! I think its time I was put down!

We used to enjoy camping, myself and Joy spent almost all our holidays camping, in one form or another, from even before we were married, we progressed from a tent to a trailer tent, owning 3 different trailer tents at different times and we really enjoyed camping, however we did eventually get rid of the trailer tent due to my back problems.

We did continue to go to Grapevine hiring a caravan, for a few years, but we eventually had to give that up too, largely due to Steven’s needs, it became impossible to constrain him on a camp site without having him strapped into his wheelchair the whole time, if he was left loose he could end up anywhere and that could spell trouble!

Anyhow, having spent the last few years getting used to the luxuries of self catering bungalows (even though they are expensive!) the idea that we might go back to camping isn’t really one I had expected, we know its still not practical for Steven, however Joy has persuaded me that Natalie is up to the joys of camping and that we ought to give her the opportunity to experience this pleasure!

So the idea is that we will go camping a couple of times next year when Steven is in respite, and perhaps myself and Joy will go away when both kids are in respite at the same time? Are we totally mad?

Anyhow, we went to Tony Wilds to look at tents a week ago and saw a really nice one for a bargain price, it was the demo unit for sale, we went back there today with Nat only to find it had been sold but looking round we spied a really nice Khyam tent (its an 8 birth) that we liked, although the price tag (£245) was a bit more than we were wanting to pay, on getting home I did the obligatory search on the web for one and found an identical model, different manufacturer (Wynnster Raven) but same dimensions and shape for a fraction of the price (£175 delivered!) so we have ordered that, it should be with us by the end of the week.

So yes there are 3 of us and we have gone for an 8 birth! I had thought we were going for something suitable for a couple of nights but it became clear that, even without Steven, we need a fair amount of space to cope with Nat’s needs etc. so this might be a bit of an over kill but there we go! Its what we have gone for.

The other idea is that we might consider Grapevine again, if Steven is in respite over the bank holiday weekend, we should be able to get up for a few days of the event and stay in the tent, we should be able to participate more in the church group if we don’t have Steven there so it could be better, will be a shame for Steven to miss out but we just feel that its too much hard work for us to consider taking Steven to Grapevine.

Obviously I can write a bit about our camping experience and our thoughts and views on the tent but that wont happen for a while as we are not going to be using it until next summer.

Now we have to check out what camping equipment we still have stashed around and buy any additional equipment we may need, not sure where to even begin with that but we do have time to play with.
